Gerda Schilder

Gerda Schilder
Gerarda “Gerda” Christina Schilder, age 94, formerly of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Ritz Lutheran Villa (Mitchell). Wife of 41 years to the late Michel Schilder of Stratford. Loving mother of Brian Schilder and his wife Andrea of Stratford. Step grandmother to both Peter Schilder, his wife Gerda, their daughter Hanja and the soon to arrive Peter Gerrit; and Dewald Schilder, his wife Janice and daughters Skyla and Amy, all in South Africa. Special friend and ‘mom’ to Lise Desrochers of Toronto. Aunt to Tina, Ellis, Margreet, Ton, and Marjolein in the Netherlands, and many grand nieces and nephews and their children. Predeceased by her sister Joop, her brother in law Ton, and her niece Nel. Born in Utrecht, Netherlands, survivor of the German occupation of Holland from 1939-1945; after the war Gerda became a trained professional secretary for two large Dutch companies (Philips and AKU). Gerda and her late husband Michel immigrated to Canada in 1957 after a sea voyage on the SS Maasdam settling first in Kingston and then in Toronto. She began the original “Wool Mill” wool shop in 1962 in the Beaches area of Toronto. Over the years, Gerda became known as the “Wool Lady”, a teacher and mentor to hundreds of knitters and crocheters from beginner to advanced, passing on skills she had learned from her own mother. In 1989, Gerda and Michel escaped the hustle and bustle of Toronto and moved to Stratford where she became very involved with her new community volunteering for many years with both the Gallery Stratford and the Red Cross knitting group. Brian and Andrea would like to sincerely thank the staff of both McCarthy Place in Stratford and Ritz Lutheran Villa (Mitchell) for their dedicated help and assistance with Mom over the past years. A special note of thanks goes to Joan, Ruth, Rachel, Krista, Kelsey, Gaye and Kani of Ritz Lutheran Villa for their special care of Mom during her last days. No funeral service is planned in accordance with Gerda’s wishes. In lieu of flowers and as expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or the Canadian Cancer Society through the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford. 519.271.7411
