Erle Thornton

Erle Thornton
After almost 90 years, Erle has reached the end of this time we call life and begun a much anticipated new adventure. As he transitions to a life beyond, he rejoins his wife Evelyn (Keena), his wife of 63 years, his parents Clifford and Lillian and all 5 of his siblings, Cliff, Jean, Al, Bob and Roger.

He is deeply mourned by his daughters Pauline (Dana Kennedy) and Diane (Francis Caza), grandchildren Julian and Charlotte, brothers-in-law Doug Keena (Fran) and Wallace Mildon (Jean), sister-in-law Eileen Thornton (Roger) and a host of nieces and nephews who had a special relationship with Uncle Erle.
Born in Toronto on June 30, 1927, ‘Duke’ came to Sebringville to pursue a chance encounter with the girl of his dreams and stayed to raise a family. He became an integral part of the community as a businessman (Sebringville Plumbing and Heating), builder, volunteer fireman, and faithful member of Emmanuel United Church.

Erle felt very blessed. He took risks and valued enthusiasm for life above all else. He sold his business when it no longer was his passion and instead pursued real estate and contracts on both Baffin Island and at the United Church mission hospital in Bella Bella, B.C. He spent over forty winters in Key Largo, Florida and acquired an extra set of life-long friendships. He lovingly built boats and sailed solo the Great Lakes, major rivers and Arctic waters. He ‘busted a chord’ for over fifty years as a Barbershop Harmony member. He built travel trailers and took his family across Canada and the U.S. One of those trailers became the family cottage at Turnbull’s Grove, Grand Bend in 1958 where Erle and Evelyn eventually became permanent residents.

Erle liked nothing better than sitting quietly in the sun - on water or land- watching the interplay of wind and light on the waves while greeting every passerby. We envision him having plenty of those opportunities in his new life.
