After a courageous battle with cancer, Shirley Anne Gottschalk passed away peacefully at the Stratford General Hospital on Friday November 29, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1938 in Kincardine, daughter of the late Melvin and Marie (Petter) Bennett. Beloved wife of her high school sweetheart, Bill. Bill and Shirley were married on Aug. 27, 1958 and recently celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary. Loving mother of Rick Gottschalk (Deb), Lynda Reisenfeld (Doug), and Barry Gottschalk (Julie). Proud grandmother of Shawna, Tara, Devi, Laina, Kyra, Kelvin, Casie, and Carley. Dear sister of Melba Bennett and brothers Dick Bennett (Janet), and Bill Bennett. Fondly missed by many nieces and nephews and their families. Predeceased by her sister June Abbey (George), brothers George and Keith in infancy. Her friendly smile and positive outlook on life will always be remembered by her many friends. Shirley graduated from the Stratford School of Nursing in 1966. She was a nurse on the Pediatric Floor at Stratford General Hospital for 25 years. Her cheerful smile, her tender compassion, and her caring personality gave comfort to the children under her care. Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford on Tuesday December 3rd from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. John Patterson will officiate the funeral service to celebrate Shirley’s life at the funeral home on Wednesday December 4th at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Avondale Cemetery. A reception to share memories of Shirley will follow at the funeral home reception centre. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Stratford General Hospital Foundation, London Health Sciences Centre Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, or to the charity of one’s choice through the funeral home. 519 271-7411.
