It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lionel “Lefty/Lew” Ayre on February 14, 2014. Lew was born in London, Ontario on October 18, 1923. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Elva of 61 years, March 22, 2011. Cherished father of Kathy, Gary (Barbara) and Sandra (Mitch). Proud Grandfather of Stephanie, Robert, Mitchell, Adam and Julia. Predeceased by his parents Arthur and Anne, his brothers Wibb and Norm and his sister Beth. Lew was a veteran of World War II and fought for the Lincoln Welland Regiment in Holland. He was well known in the London and Stratford area during his younger years while playing junior baseball and hockey. After the war Lew worked for many years as a locomotive mechanic with the CNR and later joined Domtar in St. Mary’s until his retirement at 65. The family would like to thank the Lincoln Park Retirement Community and McNally House in Grimsby for the compassionate care given to Lew and his family. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Wednesday, February 19 followed by a funeral service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 9 Douro Street, Stratford, on Thursday, February 20 at 11 am.
