It is with deep sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our mother Mrs. Helga Gartner on April 2, 2014. Our Mom is loved dearly by her partner Helmut, her two sons, Manfred (Elaine) and Werner (Gayle) and her grandchildren Jordan, Brody, Michaela and step grandchildren Joel and Mackenzie. She will also be missed by her family in Germany – sister Hildegard Schulze and sisters and brothers-in-law, Rita and Karl Blaess, Marianne Gartner, Christa Gartner, Laurenz Klein, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Mom was pre-deceased by our Dad, Hubert, her husband of 50 years (2006) as well as her parents Suzanne and Jacob Haas and 3 step-siblings. Mom was born on May 1, 1935, and raised in Lampertheim, Germany and married Dad in 1956. They relocated to Canada when our family was young and settled in Stratford to start their new life in this community. Outside of raising her family, Mom very much enjoyed her friends and colleagues at Fischer Bearings AG, where she worked for over 30 years. She made many lifetime friends there and stayed in touch with most, long after her retirement. A big part of Mom’s life has always been her love of music and in particular her membership in the Teutonia Club Choir. The friends she made there and the love she had of singing, travelling and practicing with the choir, came through in everything she did. She was also a consummate cook, seamstress and loved to bake. She also felt very privileged to be a long time member of the Teutonia and Concordia German Clubs, where she developed many dear friendships. Mom was always particularly proud of her grandchildren and played a big role in their lives. She spent many wonderful holidays with them, throughout this country and many others. She was an inspiration to her grandkids in many ways, teaching them through her love of life, travelling, music, cooking and in particular, her dedication to her friends and family. Over the past couple of years, Mom was beginning to struggle with forgetfulness, so was not in touch with as many of her friends as she would have liked, and this, we know, she regrets. Her children are forever grateful to her partner Helmut, her friends Else and Heinz and her cousin Anne-Marie and Willie for their love and companionship during the last couple of years. Friends and relatives may call at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St., Stratford on Monday April 7th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday April 8th at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. Dick Bester will officiate. Interment will follow in Avondale Cemetery. Reception at the Funeral Home Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society through the funeral home. 519-271-7411. www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
