Gwendolyn Adele (Irwin) CARLETON, Born in North Ekfrid, Ontario, May 31, 1925. Died in Stratford, May 13, 2014. Predeceased by her parents Dr. E. W. Irwin and Ila Irwin of Ridgetown, Ontario. Gwen graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1944 in a War Chemistry course and served as a laboratory assistant at General Engineering Co. Ltd., Toronto until the war ended in 1945. She later graduated as a secretary and pursued this vocation in public relations, construction, mortgage and investment, and electronics in the Toronto area. She married Major Warren Jones Carleton (‘The Deacon’) March 21, 1964. ‘The Deacon’ predeceased Gwen on March 29, 1988. In Stratford, as a retiree, volunteerism was a prominent activity. She had a love of theatre and travel. Gwen was a member of St. James Anglican Church, The Friends of the Festival, a sustaining member of the Stratford Festival Theatre,
The Gallery Stratford, the Perth Museum, Foodlink, IODE, and the Royal Ontario Museum. Gwen will be remembered for her kindness, gentle manner, sense of fun, love of family and friends, interest in dogs, fashion and art. A memorial service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, Stratford on Thursday, July 3 at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Cancer Society would be appreciated.
