It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andrew (Andy) Joss on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. After just recently moving from Toronto to Stratford, ON, he then spent his last weeks in palliative care at the beautiful VON Sakura House in Woodstock, ON. Dearly cherished husband, and will be forever missed by his wife Shirley of 37 years, also survived by son Graham (Cathie) of Mississauga, only grandchild Shevell who lives with her caregivers Michaela and Bill Hollingshead in Staffordshire England. Stepdaughter Cheryl (Rene) of Stratford, step-grandsons Sean of Kitchener, Ryan of Ottawa, Andrew (Emily) of Calgary, Stepson Brian (Jennifer) of Nanaimo, B.C., sister-in-law Patricia of Toronto, brother-in-law Fred (Edna) of Ottawa. Predeceased by his first wife Sheila, daughters Cynthia, Stella, and Marilyn (infant grandson Jamie), son-in-law Michael. Andrew was an only child born in Hamilton, ON to the late Elizabeth and Andrew Joss Sr. who had emmigrated from Scotland to Hamilton in the early 1900’s. In 1940 he joined the Royal Bank and three years later enlisted with the RCAF receiving his pilot’s wings in February 1944. The Lancaster’s were an easy fit for Andy’s 6″ 4″ frame and a big improvement from smaller planes he had to cram himself into throughout his training. After the war ended, Andy chose to remain in England and rejoined the Royal Bank retiring at age 60 as a vice president. For the next 13 years he was again with the Royal Bank as one of several consultants (while waiting for Shirley to retire). When fully retired Andrew was able to devote much of his time to gardening and could be seen most days puttering around the property from morning to night. He was actually dubbed “Mr. Green Jeans” by a neighbour. So if God needs a gardener in Heaven – he’s the man! Our “gentle giant” will be so very much missed by family and friends. We are reminded of a generous kind hearted man, demonstrated by the many charities he supported. He possessed a realistic, sensible approach to life’s challenges of which there were many throughout his own life. We are so thankful for the superb care extended to Andy at the VON Sakura Hospice in Woodstock, staff and volunteers, who were exceptional in their grace and compassion. Friends and relatives are invited to a celebration of Andy’s life at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St., Stratford on Saturday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to VON Sakura House and may be made through the funeral home 519 271 7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
