Peggy Marie Knapp, age 86 passed away peacefully at Cedarcroft Place, Stratford on August 13, 2014. Peggy was born in Milverton, Ontario daughter of the late Gordon and Margaret Smith. Beloved wife of the late Wallace (Wally) Knapp who predeceased her April 16, 2009. Loving Mother of Beth Pearson (Murray), David Knapp. Grandmother to Kristi Pearson, Mark Pearson (Alexia Greschner). Great grandmother of Tessa. Dear sister of David Smith (Wanda). Also survived by sisters-in-law Audrey Gillespie and Dorothy McRae and several nieces, nephews and their families. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by her son Bob Knapp in 2002, by a brother Mac Smith and by brothers-in-law Jack Gillespie and Murray McRae. Peggy was active in church and community. She is best known for her contributions to the Woman’s Institute, an organization for personal growth and community action for rural woman. She has been an active member in the Women’s Institute for over 50 years, assuming leadership roles at the branch, district, area, provincial, national and international levels. From 1950 to 1979 Peggy and her husband Wally operated Greenwood Farm, one of Canada’s top Holstein herds. She was appointed by Order in Council as a public interest representative from 1981-1990 to the Ontario Veterinary Association. Peggy was an Honourary Governor of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. From 1989 to 1998 she served as a representative of the FWIO to the Royal’s Board of Directors, and from 1991-1998 was a member of the Executive and Agriculture Administration Committee. Peggy is a 1998 inductee in the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame. She is also the recipient of an Honourary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Guelph. Peggy was an Honourary Professional Agrologist. Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Saturday, August 16, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 3 p.m. A reception will follow in the funeral home reception centre.
