Arnold Philip Merkel, age 78, of Stratford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends December 27, 2014. He was born in North Easthope Township, June 3, 1936, son of the late Philip and Anna Merkel. Beloved husband for 54 years of Gerry (Heinbuck). Loving father of Heidi Di Diomete (Robert), Tim Merkel, Trina O’Rourke (David), Marnie Merkel. Grandfather of Devin, Haley, Nolan and Kiera Di Diomete, Breanna, Brodie, Gibson and Maxwell Merkel. Great grandfather of Jaxen. Dear brother of Bill Merkel (Irene) and his twin sister Margaret Merkel. Also survived by his honourary brother Don Brooks (Pat), close cousin Hugo Wickenheisser, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Olive Flick (Bill), Marie Levesque (Maurice), Harold Hurley, Betty Anne Culver and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother Walter, a sister Rose, sisters-in-law Eileen Stock (Joe), Doreen Hurley and a brother-in-law Kenneth in infancy. Arnold was born and raised on the family farm and was often heard retelling the many memories and stories from his childhood days. He spent most of his working years at Cooper Bessemer in the finance department where he was a whiz with numbers. He enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, spending time with family and friends and just driving through the countryside. He was a humble man with quite a sense of humour. He was always doing good for others, in particular those less fortunate. He was always quick to forgive and he never held a grudge. Arnold was a man of great faith and has been a lifetime member of St Josephs Roman Catholic Church where he served in many different capacities. His love for his family was evident every day. He loved his grand children dearly and could often be heard cheering at hockey games and soccer fields. He will be missed, never forgotten and always in our hearts.
