Samuel “Sammy” Richmond Cox, age 91, of Stratford passed away peacefully at Spruce Lodge on Saturday August 1, 2015. Born in Darvel, Scotland, son of the late John and Margaret (Richmond) Cox. Survived by his true love and best friend of 67 years, Jean (Drummond) Cox. Loving father of Graham Cox (Kristine Lott) and Gord Cox (Laurie Tennent). Grandpa of Janna and Rachel Cox, great grandpa of Kayden, Meleena and Vayda. Sam is survived by a sister Mamie Leckie. Sam will be remembered by many nieces and nephews in Canada and Scotland. Sam is a former Scottish international footballer. Sam initially played for Queen’s Park, Third Lanark and Dundee during World War II. He joined Rangers in 1946 and played in the Scottish Football League when it recommenced play after the war. In Canada Sam played in the National Soccer League for Toronto Ulster United in 1958, Toronto Sparta in 1959 and was player-coach of Stratford Fischers in 1960. He also played for the Ontario All-Stars against West Bromwich Albion in 1959. Sam made a total of 310 appearances for Rangers and won 25 caps for Scotland. Sam was employed with Fischer Bearing in Stratford for 35 years before retiring. Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased by a son Allan Cox (October 3, 2009). A celebration of his life will be held at the Army Navy Air Force Veterans Hall, 151 Lorne Ave., Stratford, on Thursday, October 15 at 4 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, Stratford Youth Soccer, or to the charity of one’s choice through the W.G.
