In the quiet moments before dawn on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at Stratford General Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family, our Mom slipped away peacefully following a brief illness. Eleanor was born in Toronto on July 22, 1931, the eldest of nine children of the late Nora and Thomas Dowling. Eleanor married the love of her life, Joseph Nelson Bernier on September 10, 1949 at St. Basils Church in Toronto and they shared 50 wonderful years together, before he predeceased her on December 26, 1999. Together they raised 6 children and lived in Toronto and Burlington before settling in Stratford in 1962. In later years, Eleanor and Smilin Joe enjoyed travelling to the U.S., the Caribbean and England with family and friends. In Eleanors recent years, she enjoyed the companionship of her new friends at McCarthy Place Retirement Home. Eleanor worked in ladies fashion in Stratford and that led to her keen sense of fashion and style, which she always demonstrated. Eleanor was a member of St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church and was a proud member of the Catholic Womens League for over 60 years, including a position as president of St. Josephs CWL. She was an incredibly faith-filled woman and her unwavering faith gave her strength and courage during challenges, and helped to shape our mother, a woman of strength, determination and quiet dignity, and was an inspiration to all who knew her. Eleanor was incredibly proud of her 6 devoted children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren Bonita and Patrick Batty and their children Lauren Batty and partner Geoff Padmore, and Bryan Batty and partner Emily Mandel. Theresa Dubblestyne (who predeceased her February 5, 2013) and her husband Barry (January 20, 2000) and their children Erin and Matt Verellen (Ethan and Emma), Ryan and Julia Dubblestyne (Gracelynn and Adelynn), Evan Dubblestyne and partner Nicole Comeau (Alice Dubblestyne). Joe and Patti Bernier and their children Daniel and Ashley Bernier (Hartley, Hudson and Sullivan), Mike Bernier (Hailey, Caden and Noah), and his partner Raven Phalen, Jennifer and Jordan Artindale (Nora). Michelle and Patrick Daugharty (Brian). Danielle Wynne and partner James Seibel and their children Jessica Wynne and Ella, Nola and Dante Seibel. Greg Bernier and his children Alex, Stephen and Heather Bernier. Eleanor loved spending time with her family and was always so very proud to introduce them to everyone. She is also survived by her siblings and their spouses Nora (Howard) Harrigan, Mary (Ken) Shambrook, Frank (Lynne) Dowling, Jim (Darlene) Dowling and sisters-in-law Marg Dowling, Merelyn Dowling and Cathy Dowling. She was predeceased by her sister Doreen McCarnan and her brothers Thomas, Michael and Joseph Dowling. She was also predeceased by her infant son Thomas. Friends may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday, June 24, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Josephs Roman Catholic Church, 96 Huron Street, Stratford with interment at Avondale Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Josephs Church Restoration Fund or to the Gift Program at SickKids Hospital in Toronto through the funeral home. Mom had a lifelong devotion to her faith, a deep and lasting love for her husband and family and an unshakeable belief in the power of prayer. She will always be in our hearts. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
