Robert Alexander Withrow, age 95 of Stratford passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital on January 7, 2017. Bob was born in Stratford, May 18, 1921, son of the late David and Caroline (Thom) Withrow. Beloved husband for 67 years of Ariel (McNaught). Amazing father of Lynne Taylor (Bryce), Kerry (Lynda) and Darryl (Christine). Proud and Loving Grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his sister Isabelle Powell (Pat).
Bob grew up in Stratford and was very involved in music. He played clarinet in community marching bands conducted by his father. He sang in Mr. Polleys boy choirs and eventually became choir conductor of his church choir for many years. His love for music was passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Bob worked for the CNR railroad for 35 years as an apprentice, machinist, work study and quality control analyst and equipment supervisor. During his apprenticeship period he took a leave to serve in the Navy during WWII. After the war, Bob continued to work for the railroad and eventually became part of the development and implementing of G.O. Transit Commuter Service in the Toronto, Hamilton and Oshawa corridor and then supervised the equipment maintenance program once the G.O.Train was in operation.
Following his retirement in 1976 he was hired by Urban Transportation Development Corporation (UTDC) to oversee the refurbishment of 12 European railway coaches in Switzerland and 4 locomotives in Holland. He managed the transportation of this equipment from Rotterdam to Toronto and these rail cars and locomotives became part of the Ontario Northland Railway.
Bob was also very involved in his church, the Community of Christ. He has served in the priesthood since 1941, was a Pastor in the Woodbridge congregation north of Toronto for 10.5 years and was councillor to the district president of the Toronto Region for 22 years. Bob was a familiar smiling face in the Stratford community, sitting beside Salvation Army kettles during the past Christmas seasons.
