Gladys May Meier passed away peacefully May 2, 2017 at the Ritz Lutheran Nursing Home Mitchell. She is survived by Gladys son Howie and his partner Veronica, her grandson Joel and his partner Shannon, her nieces Joan, Bev, Elanor and nephew Don. She was predeceased by her late husband Dutch Meier, her brother and two sisters. Born 101 years ago on a farm near Mitchell Ontario. She spent most of her remarkable life in Stratford where she moved to work during World War II in a local factory supporting the war effort. During her life, there were two World Wars, a depression, the invention of TV, computers, air planes and many things we take for granted today. It is hard to imagine the changes she witnessed. While in Stratford and at a Stratford Indians hockey game, she met her late husband C. H. Dutch Meier, a former Mayor of Stratford. Gladys, the farm girl from Mitchell, met Prime Ministers and even met The Queen on an occasion, which for weeks prior to that meeting she was very concerned about how to curtsey before The Queen, practising the proper form often around the house. Her one grandson Joel was her light – always a smile to her face when she heard about him. Gladys looked forward to the weekly visits from her niece Joan, who drove from Seaforth each week and brought Gladys her stockpile of cookies and sweets. She did have a sweet tooth, a box of chocolates next to her till the end. Cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Stratford charities of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford. 519.271.7411
