With heavy heart we announce the passing of John Charles Durnford at the age of 84, on December 23rd at River Gardens Retirement Residence.

John was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Joyce Durnford (Norman) in 2001, his brother, David and his niece, Tina.  He leaves behind loving memories for his two daughters, Alison Durnford of Stratford and Jill Durnford (Dr. Jeff Field) of Rednersville.  Bubba to his four grandchildren, Eli Durnford (Angie), Graeme Henry, Noah Durnford (Marisa), and Paige Henry.  Sadly missed by his sister, Sheila Ford and his three nieces, Angela, Shelley and Marie.  He had a special place in his heart for Kim Ruston, Lori Weisflock, and Landon and Nova Pickering.

John was born in Bristol, England where he met and married his wife, Patricia.  In 1957, they immigrated to Canada.  He was as proud of his British roots, as he was of his adopted home. He spent the majority of his life in Canada in Petawawa and Belleville, moving to Stratford seven months ago.  He loved to dance and he sang loud and often and soon became a fan of the Stratford Summer Concert series.  He blared Christmas carols in July because he just loved the season.  In the summer months, you would find him basking in the sun at his trailer on Consecon Bay.  He was over the moon to have a Timmies coffee or a sweet treat from Brenda’s bakery.  John never went out without a pocketful of Werthers and he was quick to share one.

A very special thank you to the staff of River Gardens for their kind hearts and caring ways.  John could not say enough good things about their Friday Fish and Chips and the fact that they provided him with a home, which he called, “The best place to live”.   Thank you also to Dr. Bates of Rednersville for his care and his support of both John and his family.

Cremation has already taken place.  A wake for John will be held at his daughter’s residence in Stratford on January 6, 2018, 2–4 pm.   A celebration of his life will follow this summer on the Bay of Quinte.  Memorial donations may be made to the Belleville General Hospital or the Salvation Army through the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
