It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Selena Doreen Bannon (Doreen) in her 68th year on February 27, 2018. Following a long courageous battle with cancer Doreen passed at home surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of Michael Bannon for 46 years, mother to Melanie Bannon, Sean Bannon (predeceased 1978), Megan (Ron) Gervais, Amy (Steven) Sheffar and Daniel Bannon (Kristan). Cherishing memories of a special Grandma are Claire, Henry, Dannika and Michaela, around whom her world revolved. Doreen will be fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews and her extended family. Doreen was born April 27, 1949 on their family farm in Hullett Township, fifth child to Earl Benjamin and Marion Elizabeth Riley (nee Hunking). Doreen will be missed by her brothers and sisters, Douglas (predeceased 1984), Marilyn (Ron) Goodfellow, Elda (Jerry) Riehl, Dorothy (Del) Bedard, Donna (Robb) Shaddick, Gordon, Gerald (Deb), Greg, Sandra (Colin) Alexander and Lorna (Len). Doreen graduated from Stratford General Hospital-School of Nursing in 1970. Her nursing career was focussed mainly at University Hospital in London for over twenty five years.  Doreen was happiest with a grandchild in her arms, whether it be with her entire family around the dinner table celebrating or baking cookies with grandchildren her passion for family values and family love impacted all around her. Missed will be the deep care and love she had for each and every family member. She will be missed but not forgotten, her laugh, compassion and kind heart will be present at every family gathering. The family wish to express a sincere thank you for the many months of kindness and care given Doreen by the medical profession, Doctors and nurses of University Hospital’s 8th floor, London Regional Cancer Program and the many nurses and caregivers that supported our family on a daily basis. Throughout her illness Doreen was always touched by the many acts of kindness given her. Every card, flower, phone call or visit by friends or relatives gave her strength to make it through one more day. Visitation will be at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St., Stratford, on Sunday, March 4 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with Parish Prayers at 1:45 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 50 Well St., Stratford on Monday March 5, at 11 a.m. Following the interment in Avondale Cemetery, a reception will be held in the Parish Hall.  In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a donation in Doreen’s memory are asked to consider the Canadian Cancer Society and may be made through the funeral home. 519.271.7411.
