SMITH (Scott) Mabel Elma followed “the old old path” to meet her maker, having lived to her 100th year. Mabel died in her home of 59 years, surrounded by family, on December 31, 2018. Mabel was born in Saugeen Township on May 25, 1919 to the late William and Mae (Leeder) Scott and is predeceased by siblings Margaret McArthur, Gomer and Edna McCarrell, all of Saugeen. With her late husband, Thomas Smith, Mabel has a son, Robert (Carol) and a daughter, Sheri (Dave) Stevenson, as well as grandchildren Margaret, Madeira and Quinlan. From her youth, Mabel was drawn to a life of service. Following graduation from McDonald College (now the University of Guelph) in 1940 and working as a dietitian in Toronto schools, she left a rewarding career in the city after marrying Tom in 1957 and moving to his home farm in Downie Township. She soon became a parent and, in time, foster parent to over a hundred children, including those who stayed at the farm long-term: George, Gerald, and Dave Salm, Carol Lagrandeur, Randy White and Norm Wilson. Mabel opened her home to all and was loved by everyone who knew her. She worked tirelessly at home, at church and in the community as a long-term volunteer at St Johns United Preschool, at Telecare and at OneCare, to name just three organizations she cared about, and as a valued member of the Sebringville Women’s Institute. In 1985, Mabel was ordained an elder in the Community of Christ where she ministered through her teaching, preaching and her gift of spiritual counsel, as well as keeping active in women’s groups and leading the girls’ programme. The peacekeeper, wonderful cook and avid Scrabble player will be missed by all but will long be remembered as a loving role model and exceptional human being. Her celebration of life will be held at Stratford’s Community of Christ Church January 6th at 2 p.m. with visitation at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ziontario or the charity of choice would be appreciated and may be made through the W.G. Young Funeral Home. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
