SOUTHAM, Verna June (maiden surname SWANSON), aged 89, passed away peacefully, at home, on May 27, 2019, less than three weeks short of her 90th birthday (June 15, 2019). Verna had been a chronic sufferer of respiratory problems for nearly her entire life.

Predeceased (May 6, 2013) by her husband of fifty-three years, Harry B. Southam, also originally of Stratford, Verna was a graduate of Stratford Central Collegiate (1947), Macdonald Institute (University of Guelph; 1948), Western University (1952) and the Ontario College of Education (1952). She taught history and physical education at the secondary level in Waterdown ON and Mitchell ON until her marriage in August, 1960 and subsequent move to Brant County.

Granddaughter of John A. Makins, former Police Magistrate and Chair of the Board of Governors of the Stratford General Hospital, and Annie Scott, of South Easthope Township, and daughter of Elsie Annie Swanson, of Stratford, Verna is survived by her son, David, his wife, Luella, and her daughter Ann Southam, all of Stratford, as well as by cousins John W. Makins (and his wife, Bev), of London ON, and Catherine Makins Cornford (and her husband, Rick), of Ottawa ON, and numerous other cousins, nephews and nieces, in a wide Canadian diaspora.

Verna’s funeral will be conducted on Saturday, June 15, 2019, at St. James Anglican Church, 41 Mornington Street, Stratford ON, beginning at 10:30 a.m., after which she will be laid to rest in Avondale Cemetery, next to her husband.

At this time, David, Luella and Ann wish to identify and pay public tribute to Samantha Reaume, M.D., and Barbara McIntosh, R.P.N., of the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), for service well above and beyond the call the duty in our Mother’s final hours. We also wish to publically acknowledge the service of Verna’s health care team, over several years, at HPHA Stratford and St. Mary’s, and to Paul Roulston, pharmacist, and his team. Thank you for your service.
