MACMILLAN, Angus Richard (Gus)
June 10, 1929 – February 26, 2020

Of Stratford, ON passed away at Stratford General Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Born in what was then Walkerville (Windsor), Gus grew up as “Dick”, son of Angus William and Lillian Helen (née Sloggett).

In 1964, he met the love of his life and soul mate, Jovanka (Jeanne) Sparavalo. Their courtship was unlikely and magical. They married on October 16, 1965 and had two children Lara Roselen and Kieren Risto.

As a young man attending university at Trinity College in Toronto, philosophy and language studies consumed him, he made lifelong friendships, and he went on to study Law at Osgoode Hall. Following graduation, he returned to Windsor and soon after formed the law firm of MacMillan & MacMillan with his brother, William. When their father, Angus W., retired from his position as magistrate, they brought him into the firm.

Gus was an avid cyclist who chose to bicycle to the office for most of his working years. He was well-known for pulling out the bagpipes for special occasions and summer afternoon reveries. An active member of All Saint’s Anglican Church in Windsor, he served in numerous posts over the years, supported important parish initiatives, and sang in the choir. Gus had a lifelong love affair with words, delighting in well-written prose, poetry, and letters. He enjoyed learning new things, and soared in animated discussions with others about life, meaning, and connection.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Gus was perhaps at his most contented when hiking and canoeing in Algonquin Park. Upon their retirement, Jeanne and Gus moved to Stratford where they were often seen walking hand-in-hand around Lake Victoria.

Gus will be remembered as the beloved husband of Jeanne, loving and supportive father of Lara (Craig) and Kieren (Lada), delightful grandfather to Marianna and Theodore, and loyal brother to William (Marilyn) and Robert (Judy).

Celebrations of his life will be held in the spring in Stratford and Windsor. To receive information on times and locations, please fill out the online form ( or contact the family by email (
