It is with heavy hearts, the Blowes family announces the passing of an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and genuine people person.  J.R. (Bob) Blowes, age 86, life-long resident of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth. Born in Oshawa, Bob was the eldest son of the late Stanley and Jean (Gibson) Blowes. He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years Margaret (Young) Blowes.

Proud and loving father of Beth Blowes and partner Mark Arthur of Auburn, Nancy and husband Gerry Altenburg and Brian Blowes and wife Becky all of Stratford.

Grandfather of Marijke and husband Matt Brown of London, Jacob Altenburg and wife Renee of Barrie and Julia Blowes, Jess Blowes and Emma Blowes all of Stratford.

Great Grandfather of Adelaide, Maeve and Archer Brown and Noah Altenburg

He is survived by his brother Barry (Sam) Blowes and his sister Pat and her husband Dick Mah as well as his many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his brother Ted Blowes, sister-in-law’s Jane Blowes and Cathy Blowes and his nephew Neil Mah.

Bob owned and operated Stan Blowes Book and Gifts and Office Supplies until his retirement in 1991 where he was proud to have operated the first box office for the Stratford Festival in its inaugural year. He developed many long lasting friendships while operating the store and always had a joke or story to tell while he was calling on customers or working in the store.  He was particularly happy to be part of the family business’s 70th anniversary celebrations in 2019.

He was a dedicated member and volunteer of the now Avondale United Church as well as president and founding board member of L’Arche Stratford. He was a past chairman of the United Way and the Chamber of Commerce and also a life member of the Jaycees Club of Stratford as well as a volunteer with Big Brothers, Canadian Cancer Society and Meals on Wheels and many other charitable organizations in the city.  He spent many years visiting people in need in the community and in his later years he spent hours phoning and cheering up these same people.

He was named Stratford’s Citizen of the Year in 1995, the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award in 1998, the Stratford Chamber of Commerce’s Personal Excellence Award in 1999 as well as the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 2016.

The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care and compassion that Bob received from the staff at the Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth, OneCare, Care Partners, Southwest LHIN, Stratford Family Health Team, Stratford and St Marys Hospital, Spruce Lodge and Better Ways for Seniors for making Bob’s last years more comfortable. We are blessed to live in such a caring community with such special people.

He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

In keeping with Bob’s wishes cremation has taken place, a private family service will be held and a celebration of Bob’s life will be announced at a later date.
