Mary Ilene Wagler (Nee Willis)

Our beloved mother, Mary Ilene Wagler (nee Willis) passed away July 24th in her 88th year. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Myrtle Willis, her husband, Daniel and brother, Marwood and sister, Leola Freeman. She was also predeceased by her mother-in-law, Emma Wagler and sisters-in-law, Eileen Wagler, Esther Wagler, Edna Ropp and Marie Bender, as well as brothers-in-law, Michael Freeman, Omar Wagler, Norman Wagler, John Dyck, Earl Bender and Elmer Ropp. Predeceased by her granddaughter, Leyla Sbai and her grandson, Quintin Wagler. She is survived by her seven children: Marie Struthers (Neil), James (Kay), Bonita, Brian (Diane), Darlene Birkenhead (Sam), Allan (Laurie) and Ronald (Michelle); sisters-in-law Gertrude Willis, Vera Dyck and Viola Wagler as well as Esther and Roy Scheerer, Deborah and Joe Zehr and Florence and Anders Bergsma, as well as 16 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and cousins. Mary was born in Exeter, grew up in Huron County, and graduated from Normal School in London where she was the first woman to win top marks in mathematics. She taught grades one to eight in a one-room school at Welburn, Ontario and kept in touch with many of her students throughout her life. She loved quizzing her grandchildren with mathematical equations, participating in the income tax volunteer program, cooking for large crowds, country music and was known for her homemade bread and organic free-range chickens. A private family graveside service will be held in the Exeter Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the charity of one’s choice may be made through the W. G.
