.Mary Helen Hazen, age 96, of Stratford passed away peacefully at her residence at Greenwood Court on Monday November 16, 2020. Born in Memrick, Ukraine, Mary Helen and her Mennonite family fled the Russian revolution in 1927, for safe haven, to begin a new life in Canada.  Predeceased by her parents Phillip Robert and Melita Keber, husband, the late Arthur Douglas Hazen (2002), her sister Frieda Macgregor and brother Rudy Keber.  Devoted mother of sons, Dr. Bill Hazen (Cathy), Dr. Ward Hazen, and John Hazen. Dear Grandmother (Baba) of Katie (Dylan), Will, Laura, Yasmine, Samantha (Nick), Michael, Sarah and James.   Great Grandmother of Enso, Eiko, and Mason.  Cherished aunt of Phillip (Jeannie), Kim and Robert Macgregor.  Great aunt of Stuart, Shona, Taylor and Andrew. Loved by daughter in law Dr. Dawn Cormier.      

After retiring from teaching in Toronto, Helen and “Oz”, moved to Stratford to be close to her sons, where they opened and ran a successful bed and breakfast.  At the age of 70, she began a new career as a real estate agent. She was a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahai’s of Stratford and Mitchell after moving there in 1992.

Well known for her longstanding, monthly “Tea at Three” where she invited people of all stripes and beliefs to hear eloquent speakers expound on the oneness of humankind, and service to humanity.

Thank you to Drs. Peter Brooks and Peter Hodes, all the wonderful caregivers at Greenwood Court.  Your professionalism and empathy during this trying time has been so appreciated by Mary Helen’s family.

In lieu of flowers and as an expression of sympathy, a donation may be made to “The Local Community Food Centre” through the funeral home.
