Thelma Susan Marguerite Trethewey (Schaefer) passed away peacefully on December 7th, 2020 at Innisfree House (Kitchener) in her 96th year. Loving wife for 63 years to George Ernest Trethewey. Daughter of the late Ira and Hazel (Sothern) Schaefer of Fordwich, Ontario. Loving sister of Donald Schaefer (Bette) and Jeanne Petznick (late Robert). Loving mother to Paul, Jim (Nancy), Susan Follows (late husband Ted), Mary (David Moody), and the late Catherine Klea (Robert). An especially loving grandmother to Matthew, Kristin, Laura, Karen, Michael, Sarah, Ellyn, and Lindsay. Great grandmother to Jeremy, Ainsley, Anders, and Nathaniel. She is remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews. Thelma trained as a Registered Nurse at Stratford General Hospital (Class of 1945) where she first met George, when he was visiting his ailing mother in hospital. After raising 5 children, her nursing career continued with the VON for another 10 years. She was a strong supporter of St.John’s United Church, the Stratford Festival Theatre, Stratford Hospital Foundation, KIWINS, and Stratford Symphony Orchestra. Thelma was blessed with many good friends and enjoyed a variety of social interactions most importantly her couples Bridge Club, which for over 50 years was a great source of fun and friendship. Following George’s passing in 2011, Thelma moved to Clair Hills Retirement Residence in Waterloo in 2013 where she lived happily surrounded by family, friends and caring staff. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date when safety can be assured. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the MS Society of Canada, Canadian Cancer Society or a donation of your choice may be made through the W. G.
