It is with heavy hearts the family of George Van Slyck announces his passing on Friday, Feb 5th, 2021, at Stratford General Hospital, at the age of 75, knowing how much he was loved and cherished by his family.

George was the beloved husband of Dianne (Berges) for 47 years, proud and loving father to Katie (Gwennig) Poirier, and Gillian (John) Hurley, and cherished “Grandpa George” to Matéo and Leïla Poirier and Caleb, Owen, Miles and Noah Hurley.

Brother to James (Lois), Robert (Maureen) and Jane (Paul).
Brother-in-law to David Berges (Mary Jane), Donna Tigani (Doug) and Doug Berges (Kim).
Fondly remembered by nieces and nephews.

After achieving degrees from Wilfred Laurier University and the University of Toronto, George became a well-respected educator with the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board.  A teacher and administrator for 30 years and a strong advocate for Catholic education, he undoubtedly left an impact on the lives of many. George also had a love of sports, especially hockey. It was therefore fitting that during his long term role as a Director with the Stratford Warriors Junior B Hockey Club, he advocated for combining sports and education.

George loved living in Stratford; its people and local businesses; engaging everyone he encountered in conversation, young and old.

George’s family was his passion. Everything he did was for his family. He cherished time with “his girls” and his grandchildren. His love for them was unmatched. He never missed a hockey practice or game. He always looked forward to spending quality time with each and every one of them; talking and sharing their individual interests. He looked forward to the annual family cottage holidays, spending time on the beach with the grandchildren and sharing a burnt “S’more” made by one of them at the end of the day.

He enjoyed time at home with family, maintaining his impeccable lawn and gardens, and sitting on the porch, talking to his neighbours with a glass of wine.
