Vera Irene Catania of Stratford, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 20th after a very brief illness. Born in Toronto on March 25, 1925 to the late Roy and Florence Walters of East York, Vera was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Peter Catania, and by her infant granddaughter Sarah Brown and her son-in-law Shaun Brown. Vera was also predeceased by all of her brothers and sisters, Clare Walters, Louise and Cliff Chapman, George and Rita Walters and June and Norman Jackson, Mike and Frances Catania, Bill and Hilda Catania, Leo and Ruth Catania and Tony, Angeline and Doris Catania.

Vera is survived by her children Christine and Charles Stedman and Marilyn and Gordon Elliott of Calgary, Jim Catania and Judi Richardson of North Vancouver and Thomas Catania of Newmarket. She is also survived by her grandchildren Alexandra and Peter Stedman, Liam, Ryan and Maureen Brown and Mitchell Catania and by her nine great grandchildren who provided GG with so much joy and laughter.

As the last surviving member of her generation in the Walters and Catania families, Vera gathered up all of the many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren and was regularly in touch by telephone and email. Her love and attention were returned by all of the family members, providing her with so much support and happiness.

Vera was born and raised in East York, just one street over from the home of her future husband Peter, whom she described as the kindest man she ever met. They married in 1944 and moved to Stratford in 1955 where they resided for the rest of their lives. Several years ago, Vera told a large gathering of family that the best decision she ever made was to marry into the Catania family and felt that the next best decision she and Peter ever made was to move to Stratford.

Vera was a “Bell Girl” starting her paid work life in Toronto with the Bell Telephone Company. Following the move to Stratford, Vera worked at home raising four children and running a very tight ship. And then her world changed when she was asked to join the Wardrobe Department of the Stratford Festival first as a seamstress and then as First Hand to several much admired cutters. Vera was honoured with a Tyrone Guthrie award in recognition of her work at the Theatre.
