Joanne Elizabeth Borris, (nee Thompson). In her 64th year, after a quietly heroic battle with cancer, Joanne passed away surrounded by family and the graces of the Catholic Church.

Left in gratitude for her tireless care are her children Stephanie (Ben), Alanna (Derek) and Gregory. “Gigi” will be sadly missed by her grandchildren, Kenton, Mackenna, Tessa, Theodore and Orla, siblings Mara (John), Blaise (Ellen), Patricia (Darren), Andrea (Dan), Sean (Sherry), Lauren, Judith, Michael (Elizabeth), Dana (Tom) and Christianne. She is also survived by 45 beloved nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Helen Thompson (nee Murphy), bothers-in-law Gary Golob and Edward Koehl, nephew Matthew Dzisiak, and Kenneth Borris, her beloved husband of 32 years.

Joanne grew up in Sarnia, Ontario, which she left to attend the University of Toronto, where she met her future husband. She was accepted into teacher’s college and law school but chose instead to settle in Willowdale, work at an art gallery in Yorkville, and begin a family with Ken. Theirs was a strong and vibrant marriage, which welcomed family and friends with abundant hospitality. Their focus on their faith and family helped them to raise grounded children accomplished in their studies and careers.

In later years Joanne increasingly turned her attention to philanthropy, supporting a number of important causes and establishing a charitable foundation overseas.

The family wishes to thank those who ministered to Joanne’s spiritual care: Fathers Robert Barringer, Don Lococo, Don Pumputis, David Butler, Chris Pietraszko, and all those who prayed so faithfully for her. Her gratitude for all of you was boundless.
