David James Martin, aged 86 of Stratford, passed away in the wonderful care of the Rotary Hospice Stratford-Perth on June 14, 2022. 

David was born to Donald Martin and Esther Martin (nee Kring) in North York, Ontario.  His family moved frequently in his early childhood.  First to Alliston, then Holland, then to Drayton, then Palmerston. At the age of 12 he was placed in the care of the Brown family on their farm just outside of Peterborough. At the age of 18 he drove from Peterborough to Stratford to re-establish his relationship with his mother who was working there as a nurse. 

David met his wife Shirley Martin (nee Tyler) when he came to Stratford in 1953.  They were married August 10, 1957 and lived in beautiful Stratford their entire married life. 

David developed his carpentry skills after arriving in Stratford and spent the majority of his working career at the Stratford Festival retiring in 2000. 

David was predeceased by his loving wife Shirley (nee Tyler) and his father Donald and his mother Esther as well as a stepfather Omund Amundson. Also, previously leaving his family too soon, were his sister Marjorie Morrison (James), his brother William (Ruby), and his sister Doreen Denny (Wilmer). 

David will be remembered by his three sons Kelvin (Tanya), Kerry (Anneli) and Kyle (Jeanette) and greatly missed by his grandchildren, Ryan, Darren (Stephanie), Patrick, Joanne Cooney (James) and Kaleb as well as his great-grandchildren Henry, Isla, Mera, April, Jacob, Katrina, Joshua and Kara. 

Visitation will be held at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday, June 24, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. A celebration of David’s life will take place Saturday June 25, at 2:00 p.m. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to The Rotary Hospice Stratford-Perth through the funeral home. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
